This course consists of four sessions here at the Leam (usually an evening), and a fantastic day trip to the river Wye (usually on a Saturday).
This course is designed for novice paddlers; maybe you have done a taster or hire session and loved it, or paddled as a child and would like to get back into it, or maybe you've never paddled but want to have a go. You will develop the basic paddle/boat skills and knowledge of river safety issues, so that you can be confident out on the water. You will also have the opportunity to spend some time playing in different types of canoe, to give you a feel for what’s out there!
Those that are interested can be assessed for their BCU 1 star award, and you will hopefully have ventured beyond this level by the end of the course.
The course cost includes all boat and equipment hire and coaching supervision.
The River Trip is a scenic paddle thorugh the Forest of Dean finishing at the well knowm Symonds Yat with the option to run down the easy rapid at the end of the day. We meet near Ross on Wye at 10.00am and usually finish around 5.00pm

This course is for you if: You have never tried canoeing before, or have had a go and enjoyed it, and would like a complete introduction to boat & paddle skills, taking in a trip and some moving water along the way.
We provide buoyancy aids (compulsory), waterproof paddling tops, and all necessary paddling equipment. So you need to turn up in basic sports wear e.g. shorts and t shirt. It’s sensible to bring a spare fleece top just in case it gets colder than expected. On hot days don’t forget sun screen and a sun hat.
If it’s cold/rainy: A warm hat, fleece top and tracksuit type trousers are ideal. (not jeans and hoodies, as they hold water). Wetsuits or waterproof trousers can be worn if you feel the cold or you can hire a wetsuit from the centre for £10 for the day.
You must wear footwear - old trainers, sandals, or wet shoes. They must stay on in the water, so flip-flops and crocs are unsuitable.
A towel and a complete change of clothing (and shoes) are required for everyone!
If you wear glasses or sun-glasses, we suggest you secure them. Neoprene spec-bands are available to buy at the centre if required.
