The course will last for a full day, starting 9.30am and finishing around 5.30pm. There will be theory and practical sessions, so make sure that you come equipped for both. Before coming on this course you should be paddling at about 2 star standard, and be fairly confident in the water, as you will be in it quite a lot!
The morning will be dry. It is useful to have notepaper and pen, also please bring with you your helmet, buoyancy aid, and any safety/rescue kit you normally carry.
After lunch we will look at using throwlines, and then go out onto the water.

This course is for you if: You have some basic paddling skills (approx 2 star) and would like to learn how to be safer out on the water, especially if you are likely to be looking after others.
For the practical session you should have all your usual paddling equipment, including any safety/rescue kit you usually carry. If you would like to use a centre boat please get in touch in advance. The practical session will include fairly long periods of wet work, so be prepared for the prevailing temperatures!
We will be practicing rescues in a variety of boats, so bring your usual boat but you’ll get a chance to try others.
The BCU suggests a kit list of:
Buoyancy aid
Helmet
Rescue gear eg throwline
Tow system e.g. Sling
Whistle
Knife
If you don’t have certain items of the above, please don’t feel you have to rush out and buy them, as we have plenty of spares, and you will hopefully gain some insight as to what you need and what’s best for you.
Please bring a packed lunch with you (or you can buy some from the town nearby). Drinks and snacks are available for purchase at the boat centre.
